How I Manage MS Naturally Without Drugs – Leafy greens and healing fruits

Hey there! Welcome to my very first blog post. I’m so excited you’re here. Today, I want to tell you a little about my journey with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). I’ve been living naturally with it since 2004. If you’re wondering how I manage MS naturally without drugs, you’re not alone.

Before we dive in, I want to be clear: I’m not telling you to ditch your medications. That’s a conversation for you and your doctor. I’m simply sharing what works for me.

My MS Wake-Up Call

Back in 2004, I had a horrible MS flare that left me looking like I’d had a stroke. Double vision forced me to search the internet with one eye closed (and yes, this was in the dial-up era!). The medication I was taking seemed to make my symptoms worse and more frequent. That scary experience pushed me to find another way.

What I discovered changed everything: food could be my medicine.

Starting From Square One

Let me be honest – I was clueless about healthy eating at first. I grew up on the standard American diet:

  • Boxed cereal for breakfast (sometimes with powdered milk – yuck!)
  • Processed, quick dinners
  • Almost no vegetables or fruits
  • Town tap water I couldn’t stand

Changing wasn’t easy. I missed my favorite foods terribly. But fear is a powerful motivator, and the thought of another severe flare kept me on track.

Finding My Own Path

Here’s where my story might differ from others you’ve read. For years, I hopped from one MS diet to another, searching for the perfect solution. But nothing really helped reverse my symptoms. Until I stopped following other people’s diets and created one to fit my body.

That’s when my symptoms actually started to reverse.

7 Healing Steps I Follow to Manage MS Naturally Without Drugs

Step 1: Eat Nervous System–Healing Foods
I focus on leafy greens, wild blueberries, flaxseeds, and cruciferous veggies.

Step 2: Avoid Foods That Trigger Flares
I cut out dairy, gluten, sugar, oils, and other foods that worsen MS symptoms.

Step 3: Make Smoothies and Simple Meals Part of Your Routine
Smoothies packed with healing ingredients make healthy eating doable every day.

Step 4: Focus on Rebuilding, Not Dieting
This isn’t about weight loss—it’s about feeding my brain and nerves what they need.

Step 5: Take Only Essential Supplements
I keep it simple: vitamin D3 and B12 are the only ones I consistently use.

Step 6: Support Your Body with Lifestyle Habits
Stress management, sleep, movement, and reducing toxins are key to staying balanced.

Step 7: Start Small and Stay Consistent
Start with one small change and keep going. Healing takes time—but it’s worth it.

My Personal MS Management Blueprint

The secret to my success isn’t complicated. I focus on foods that heal my central nervous system. Over the year’s I have adjusted it a bit. For instance, eating wild blueberries instead of conventional blueberries. I’ve also stopped taking a lot of supplements and use food as my medicine instead.

The only supplements I highly recommend are vitamin D3 and B12. Here’s a study on how vitamin D can predict MS progression.

Here’s what works for me:

Foods That Heal My Body:

Nervous System Superfoods:

  • Leafy greens (8-10+ cups daily!)
  • Cruciferous vegetables (3+ cups daily)
  • Wild blueberries (1 cup daily)
  • Fresh fruits
  • Flaxseeds (½ cup daily for plant-based omega-3s)
  • Healing herbs and spices

Warning: If you don’t currently eat a high fiber diet it’s best to start slow. Otherwise, you could have digestive issues like bloating.

Here’s what I avoid to keep MS symptoms away:

  • Processed foods
  • Dairy (causes more flares in people with MS)
  • Refined sugar
  • Eggs (cause gut pain and diarrhea)
  • Omega-6 oils (like canola, corn, soybean oil)
  • Farmed fish and fish high in mercury
  • Pork (linked to parasites)
  • Corn and soy (mostly GMO)
  • Artificial ingredients

My Daily Approach to Manage MS Naturally Without Drugs

You might be wondering: Is it hard to eat this way?

Not anymore. In fact, it feels easy now. The key is to focus on real, living foods. Foods that are vibrant, colorful, and full of life. Foods that are healing.

I keep meals simple:

  • A giant smoothie packed with leafy greens, wild blueberries, and flaxseeds
  • Big colorful salads
  • Steamed or lightly cooked cruciferous veggies
  • Fresh fruit for snacks
  • Healing herbs blended into everything

And occasionally, if I eat meat, I choose:

  • Wild-caught fish
  • Pasture-raised poultry
  • Grass-fed beef

No conventionally raised meats. No farmed fish. No junk. This is how I manage MS naturally without drugs, by rebuilding my nervous system with food.

What Makes My Approach Different?

You’ve probably heard people talk about “healthy diets for MS” before. So what makes this different?

It’s not a diet.
It’s a healing approach.

I’m not trying to lose weight or follow a trendy plan. I’m rebuilding my central nervous system, one bite at a time. And it’s working. Since I started eating this way, some of my worst symptoms have calmed down. My body feels stronger. My energy is better. My brain is clearer.

My approach is about enjoying more, not giving things up.

And the best part? I’m doing it without medications. Just real food, water, rest, and love.

Beyond Diet: My Holistic Approach

While food is my foundation, I’ve learned that managing MS naturally requires attention to other areas:

  1. Stress management – Stress flares my MS, so I focus on staying calm.
  2. Quality sleep – Nothing heals my body like proper rest
  3. Gentle movement – Finding exercise that energizes rather than wears me out
  4. Environmental toxin reduction – Being mindful about what I put on and around my body
  5. Joy and connection – Positive emotions actually support my immune function

Your Turn: Start Where You Are

When you’re dealing with MS, please don’t feel overwhelmed by my current routine. Remember, I started from boxed cereal and powdered milk! Your journey doesn’t have to look like mine.

Try adding just one healing food this week. Maybe it’s a daily cup of leafy greens or a handful of blueberries. Small steps lead to big changes over time. Learn more about what to eat on my Eat More Veggies page.
